Dynamic mechanical analysis

A DMA is a mechanical instrument that applies specific displacement or force to a sample and very accurately quantifies its force versus displacement response.

This enables to quantify the elastic (spring-like) versus viscous (fluid-like) components of the sample response which is crucial for reliable and complete viscoelastic properties (Storage Modulus G’, Loss Modulus G’’ and Tan delta) as a function of time, temperature, and frequency.

Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) provides a kind of fingerprint of the material.

Materials are subjected to a variety of different stresses (temperature, time, environment,..) in practical use. Dynamic mechanical analysis allows issues such as stability, practical application range, manufacturing processes, quality control, and material failure and defects to be addressed.

The solid materials most commonly analyzed are thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers and adhesives, composites, paints and varnishes, foils and fibers.

Equipment | DMA Mettler Toledo, DMA-1 (-150 to 600°C) | Different geometries: 3 point bending – Single/dual cantilever bending – tension – compression.
