SPECIFIC POLYMERS: Evolving Technological Maturity to Meet Today’s Challenges

Since its creation, SPECIFIC POLYMERS has established itself as a major player in research and development (R&D) in the field of specialty polymers. Building on this expertise, the company is now taking a crucial next step: broadening its impact by moving closer to the industrial world and offering innovative solutions adapted to today’s challenges.

A natural evolution: from R&D to industry

Historically, SPECIFIC POLYMERS has built its reputation on its ability to develop tailor-made solutions for its customers, ranging from laboratories to large-scale industryFor more than 20 years now, the company has been constantly structuring and evolving to adapt to the needs of its customers and partners in terms of products specificity, production capabilities or services’ offering

Today, our ambition is clear: to reinforce the maturity of our processes and increase our production capacity to facilitate the transfer to industrial production. This transition is based on a strong determination to push our key innovative technology solutions toward industrialization, capitalizing on the growing maturity of our technologies.

Innovation to meet environmental challenges

For all sectors, one of our objectives is to face up to environmental challenges. For many years now, SPECIFIC POLYMERS has been focusing its research and development activities on sustainable and more responsible materials. Our main areas of focus:

Green energy: Support the advancement of new battery technologies to boost performance and ensure greater safety, addressing the rising needs of the electric vehicle industry and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Biobased materials: replacing fossil resources with renewable alternatives.

Circularity: developing organic materials and composites that integrate the principles of the circular economy to limit waste and promote recycling, particularly regarding thermosetting resins.

Development of high performances materials: develop high-temperature thermoset resins for structural composite parts in order to reduce weight and low fuel consumption in the field of aeronautic and defense.

– Development of multifunctional coatings with enhanced performances (anticontamination, anticorrosion, antifouling, repairability, etc.) to extend the lifespan of structural materials, reduce maintenance operations or their renewal, and thereby minimize the associated wastes.

We firmly believe that tomorrow’s chemistry will be greener and more responsible, and our research efforts are aimed at proposing solutions that fit into this dynamic.

2024 Innovations : New R&D products as part of our evolutionary approach

In 2024, SPECIFIC POLYMERS reached a new milestone with the launch of several innovative products, designed to meet the challenges of sustainability and performance

Biobased DGEVA: a sustainable alternative to traditional epoxy resins

DGEVA (Diglycidyl Ether of Vanillyl Alcohol) biosourced epoxy resin is one of this year’s major innovations. Developed from renewable resources, it reduces the carbon footprint of epoxy applications while maintaining mechanical and thermal properties comparable to those of conventional DGEVA. This solution is part of our drive to replace fossil materials with sustainable alternatives, offering a response to industry’s growing need for environmentally-friendly materials. Organic DGEVA is also Bisphenol-free, making it an excellent alternative to DGEBA, one of the best-selling resins on the market.

Scale-up of DGEVA and PHTE products: a new industrial dimension

In response to growing customer demand, we have also begun scaling up our DGEVA and PHTE (PolyHexaTriEthylene) products. SPECIFIC POLYMERS’ objective is to deploy its innovations at different production scales, with a gradual transition to industrialization. Over the past three years, the first stage of industrial transfer has been completed for two of our flagship products: DGEVA and PHTE. We are now in a position to ensure pilot production of these bisphenol-free epoxy resins in quantities of several tens of kilos

Single Ion Monomers: Innovative Solutions for Batteries

At Batteries Event 2024, SPECIFIC POLYMERS unveiled two new single ion monomers (SIMs): SDICYLi (SP-59-021) and SCYLi (SP-59-031). Developed to reduce costs and comply with regulations on fluorinated compounds, notably PFAS, these monomers are currently being produced on a laboratory scale. No major obstacles have been identified for their scale-up, paving the way for significant advances for the scientific community in this strategic field.

Signature of a major project for 2026: investment of 3 million euros in the construction of a new building

SPECIFIC POLYMERS is paving the way for the future with a significant investment of 3M€ in the construction of a new building. Adjoining the current facility, this expansion will increase our workspace from 540m² to 1,400 m². Designed to meet the challenges of our key strategic objectives, this new building will enable us to achieve our ambitious growth targets.

To this end, SPECIFIC POLYMERS is planning to set up a Pilot Plant to make our synthesis processes more robust and representative of the industrial environment, while also expanding our production capacity. For synthesis, our goal is to achieve production capacities of approximately one kilogram per batch to meet the increasing demand for our R&D products. For formulations, we aim to reach production capacities of 5 to 10 kg per batch, which will enable us to retain independence in our R&D projects and gradually transition our activities toward production. In both cases, we will adapt our analytical tools to align with this approach and provide the most precise support for our clients and partners.

This ambitious project is made possible through the invaluable support of our banks and several regional and national organizations: our three banks – Banque Dupuy de Parseval, Crédit Agricole, and Crédit Coopératif – as well as the public investment bank BPI France, the financial support organization for industrialists Somudimec, the economic development agency AD’OCC, the Business and Innovation Center BIC Montpellier, the Montpellier Metropolis, and the Directorate General of Armaments (DGA).

This project is also a large-scale company initiative in which the majority of our employees have been involved in defining the specifications and expectation regarding each activities. We are now proud to initiate this project with the real estate developer CIRRUS PEGASE, specialized in complete construction and the interior design of industrial buildings, which has proposed a plan that aligns with our expectations and ambitions.

We are proud to rely on the support of these various companies and organizations to turn this project into a reality. Stay tuned to follow the progress of our project.

Together, let’s build the materials of the future.
