Versatile cyclocarbonate acrylate for advanced polymer design

At SPECIFIC POLYMERS, we develop functional monomers that help bridge molecular design and advanced material applications. This month, we highlight GCC4A (SP-40-011), also named 4-[(2-Oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methoxy]butyl acrylate or Glycerol carbonate C4 acrylate, a reactive monomer that is currently proposed for sale in 10 g, 25 g, 50 g and 100 g batches, with bulk quantities on demand. 

What makes GCC4A particularly attractive is its dual functionality. On one side, its acrylate group offers a valuable entry point for radical copolymerization and for the preparation of crosslinked polymer networks. On the other, its cyclocarbonate functionality brings an additional level of performance and application versatility. This combination makes GCC4A a highly relevant building block for researchers designing next-generation functional materials, especially for ionic conductivity and polyhydroxyurethanes.

For solid-state battery applications, cyclic carbonate motifs are of strong interest because they can create a high dielectric constant environment, helping to dissolve lithium salts, promote ion dissociation, and support ionic conductivity. Another asset of GCC4A lies in its C4 alkyl spacer providing tailored flexibility. This spacer can be a useful lever to tune the balance between reactivity, segmental mobility, mechanical behavior and, depending on the system, ionic transport properties.
