Chemicals for Research and the Development of Tomorrow’s Materials
For more than 23 years, we have been developing R&D products to support our customers and partners in their research initiatives. Our core focus has always been the sale of functional organic molecules (building blocks, monomers) and polymers, enabling the development of innovative materials across various industries, including aerospace, automotive, construction, energy, electronics, cosmetics, and healthcare. Our strength lies in our ability to custom-design new functional (macro)molecules and commercialize them for R&D purposes. This unique capability has positioned SPECIFIC POLYMERS as a key player in bridging the gap between academic research and industrial applications, pushing the most relevant molecules and compounds toward larger-scale production. The R&D products available in our online catalog reflect our capacity to provide innovative solutions across all the aforementioned sectors and beyond.
Among these products, several stand out due to their growing interest within the scientific community. As a result, we are actively working to expand our production capabilities through collaborations with our network of toll-manufacturers. Currently, most of our R&D products are produced in our laboratories at scales ranging from tens to hundreds of grams, even up to a kilogram for some specific references. However, some of our most promising products, particularly those related to environmental applications, energy, and high-performance materials, are being transferred, or are in the process of being transferred, to pilot-scale production. This transition will allow us to reach production levels of up to 50 kg, helping our customers and partners to conduct application-representative demonstrator evaluation.
A Tailor-Made Formulation Design Capability for Materials
In 2017, we expanded our services by creating an R&D department dedicated to developing innovative formulations.
Our objective was:
1 – To maximize the value of our synthesized compounds by integrating them into formulations designed to meet our clients’ technical specifications.
2 – To leverage our deep understanding of chemical industries and cutting-edge products from leading industrial groups to create formulations using industrially mature products. Thanks to our understanding of these products and our ability to align them with our customers’ needs, we can develop formulations at higher TRL levels, bringing them closer to industrial implementation.
We specialize in various types of formulations, including structural resins, functional coatings, and adhesives, utilizing chemistries such as epoxy, phthalonitrile, acrylate, vinylester, unsaturated polyester, poly(hydroxy)urethane, and polyurethane and many more – see details) Since the early beginning of this activity, we have been designing tailored formulations through both industrial and collaborative projects. Our approach most often begins with a detailed analytical assessment of the formulations and products currently used by our clients, allowing us to identify the key performance criteria that will serve as the foundation for future developments. Our expertise in physico-chemical, rheological, and thermo-mechanical characterizations, combined with our in-depth understanding of structure-property-performance relationships, guides us in formulating targeted solutions. For specific topics, our material modeling expertise can further support this process. Using advanced computational methods and molecular dynamics (MD), we simulate and analyze materials at the molecular level, accelerating the discovery of new materials and optimizing existing ones.
As a next step, our team of engineers and PhDs in formulation and materials chemistry follows an iterative co-development process with our clients. This application-driven and client-centric methodology starts by screening initial developments based on key characteristics and tests conducted jointly with our partners. Once the most promising solutions are identified, we scale up to larger material quantities for real-world application trials, and concluding with final optimizations. For our developments, the main criteria always relate to both the processing methods used (RTM, prepreg, AFP, pultrusion, coating deposition processes, etc.) and the specific application constraints. These specifications remain central at each steps of our development.
SPECIFIC POLYMERS Launches R&D Formulation Sales Initiative in 2025
Over the past years, we have developed numerous formulations for our clients and partners. Capitalizing on this experience and growing interest in our offerings, we are pleased to announce the launch of our R&D formulation sales initiative in 2025. Alongside our custom formulation development services, we will introduce a selection of ready-to-use formulated products tailored to meet specific physical characteristics and market needs. Initially, our product lines will allow customers to purchase off-the-shelf formulations based on their properties and targeted purposes :
- 🌿 Sustainable structural thermoset resins (BPA-free, bio-based, and recyclable resins)
- 🌡️ High temperature structural resins for structural parts (Phthalonitrile resins)
- ⚙️ Multifunctional coating formulations designed for applications such as anti-erosion, anti-contamination, anti-corrosion, or electrical conductivity.
Looking ahead, we are committed to continuously innovating and expanding our formulation portfolio to meet evolving market demands and support our clients’ innovation endeavors more effectively.
