Thanks to their strong affinity for metallic surfaces and excellent chemical stability, these phosphorus-functionalized compounds are used across a wide range of applications. In coatings and surface treatments, they improve adhesion and provide corrosion resistance for metals. When incorporated into epoxy, polyester, or polyamide matrices, they significantly boost flame resistance. In nanotechnology, they enable the functionalization of nanoparticles like TiO₂ and ZnO for use in catalysis, sensing, and photovoltaics. In biomedical research, phosphonic acids contribute to the design of MRI contrast agents—such as gadolinium or iron oxide chelates—and serve as building blocks for drug delivery systems. These compounds also play a key role in water treatment as scale inhibitors and dispersants, and in catalysis as efficient ligands for both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems in organometallic chemistry.
