RECORT

Towards the next generation of thermostable resins for composites

REsine pour Composite Organique Resistant en Temperature

RAPID, DGA – DGE Project

March 2022 – March 2025

To address the problematic of replacement of titanium structural pieces in aeronautics (civil or military), the RECORT project is investigating the chemistry of phthalonitriles for the elaboration of thermally stable composites. While cyanate esters are limited to a temperature range of 200-230°C and polyimide resins present compelling processing conditions, phthalonitrile resins are more easily processable and present continuous service temperature above 250°C. However, these resins are not available on the European market.

Within RECORT, SPECIFIC POLYMERS is designing innovative phthalonitrile resins, answering the specifications of the applications targeted by the different end users and in particular THALES as partner of the project.  To develop custom formulations of these resins, SP is synthesizing multiple phthalonitrile precursors to screen a large panel of formulations with different viscosities, reactivities, thermal and mechanical properties. Molecular dynamics is part of the research strategy to enhance the in-depth understanding of the material as well as to predict the thermomechanical properties of future materials.

Société Technic’Services (STS), specialized in the production of composite structural pieces for aeronautics, will process the formulations via RTM and adapt their injection process to the specific characteristics of these resins thanks to the support of composite injection molding simulation. Moreover, they will define and elaborate the best textiles and preforms for the applications. A TRL 5 is targeted at the end of the project with the development and characterization of a demonstrator with the support of THALES.

The project RECORT will allow the emergence of a chain of excellence in the fields of high temperature organic matrix composite materials in France which will open promising perspectives in the development of high-performance structural pieces.
