SP-59-005 is a building block containing two reactive functions: a styrene group and an imidazole ring. Also known as VBIm (4-Vinylbenzylimidazole), this monomer is used in conventional radical or anionic polymerization but also in controlled polymerization to access to random or bloc-polymers with several properties.
The imidazole ring linked to the styrene group is a Nitrogen-containing heterocycle that can react with several electrophiles such as halogenated precursors (e.g.: chloroalkoxy chains)1 or various sultones to lead to poly(ionic) liquids with imidazolium groups or to zwitterionic polymers.2
The properties of these polymers can be tuned by variations of the chemical structure of the monomer or by post-functionalization of the imidazole groups onto the polymers.
In Literature, SP-59-005 is largely used in the development of new zwitterionic hydrogels with antimicrobial and ultralow fouling characteristics with excellent biocomptabililty but also anti-polyelectrolyte effect or adhesive properties.2
